Is It a Dental Emergency? How to Tell and What to Do Next

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
Not every tooth issue requires immediate treatment, but some situations do. A true emergency usually involves severe pain, bleeding, infection, or trauma. Here are signs you should call us right away, and not wait for your next dental appointment:- Severe, persistent tooth pain
- Swelling in your gums, face, or jaw
- A knocked-out or loose permanent tooth
- A cracked or broken tooth with pain
- Bleeding that will not stop
- Signs of infection such as fever or a bad taste in your mouth
Common Dental Emergencies and What You Can Do
Knocked-Out Tooth
Time matters. If a permanent tooth gets knocked out:- Pick it up by the crown (the biting area), not the root
- Gently rinse it if dirty, but do not scrub
- Try placing it back in the socket if possible
- If not, store it in milk (yes, like a glass of milk!) and call us immediately
Severe Toothache
Tooth pain can signal deep decay or infection. Rinse with warm salt water and take an over the counter pain reliever if needed. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums. If the pain is intense or accompanied by swelling, contact us as soon as possible.Broken or Cracked Tooth
If you chip or crack a tooth:- Rinse your mouth with warm water
- Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
- Save any broken pieces if you can
Swelling or Abscess
Facial swelling or a pimple-like bump on the gums may indicate an infection. This is not something to ignore. Dental infections can spread if left untreated. Call our office right away if you notice swelling or feel increasing pressure. When It Can Wait a Day or Two
Some issues feel urgent but can safely wait for a scheduled visit, such as:- Mild tooth sensitivity
- A lost filling without pain
- A small chip with no discomfort
Why Fast Care Matters
Delaying treatment can lead to more complex problems. What starts as a simple cavity can turn into an infection requiring more extensive care. Acting quickly can often mean:- Less discomfort
- Simpler treatment
- Lower overall cost
- Better long term outcomes
