Is It a Dental Emergency? How to Tell and What to Do Next

Tooth pain has a way of stopping you in your tracks. Whether it starts as a dull ache during dinner or a sharp pain that wakes you up at night, it is hard to ignore. One of the most common situations we deal with as a dentist in Las Vegas is someone calling in and asking “Can you help me? I’m in pain.” At R. Lobato & Associates, we believe patients and parents should feel confident knowing they can call us about any sort of dental discomfort, even if you’re not sure if it’s an emergency. But, here is how to know if you are facing a possible dental emergency in Las Vegas.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not every tooth issue requires immediate treatment, but some situations do. A true emergency usually involves severe pain, bleeding, infection, or trauma. Here are signs you should call us right away, and not wait for your next dental appointment:
  • Severe, persistent tooth pain
  • Swelling in your gums, face, or jaw
  • A knocked-out or loose permanent tooth
  • A cracked or broken tooth with pain
  • Bleeding that will not stop
  • Signs of infection such as fever or a bad taste in your mouth
If you are unsure, it is always better to call. Our team has been serving the Las Vegas community for over 30 years, and we are happy to guide you on your next steps.

Common Dental Emergencies and What You Can Do

Knocked-Out Tooth

Time matters. If a permanent tooth gets knocked out:
  • Pick it up by the crown (the biting area), not the root
  • Gently rinse it if dirty, but do not scrub
  • Try placing it back in the socket if possible
  • If not, store it in milk (yes, like a glass of milk!) and call us immediately
Remember, quick action can sometimes save the knocked out tooth.

Severe Toothache

Tooth pain can signal deep decay or infection. Rinse with warm salt water and take an over the counter pain reliever if needed. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums. If the pain is intense or accompanied by swelling, contact us as soon as possible.

Broken or Cracked Tooth

If you chip or crack a tooth:
  • Rinse your mouth with warm water
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
  • Save any broken pieces if you can
Even small cracks can worsen over time, so it is important to have them evaluated.

Swelling or Abscess

Facial swelling or a pimple-like bump on the gums may indicate an infection. This is not something to ignore. Dental infections can spread if left untreated. Call our office right away if you notice swelling or feel increasing pressure.

When It Can Wait a Day or Two

Some issues feel urgent but can safely wait for a scheduled visit, such as:
  • Mild tooth sensitivity
  • A lost filling without pain
  • A small chip with no discomfort
That said, pain is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong. If you are not sure, we are just a phone call away.

Why Fast Care Matters

Delaying treatment can lead to more complex problems. What starts as a simple cavity can turn into an infection requiring more extensive care. Acting quickly can often mean:
  • Less discomfort
  • Simpler treatment
  • Lower overall cost
  • Better long term outcomes
